Christian Education New Christian Education Calendar!
Jubilee looks at faith journey The Jubilee Class, which meets in Room 15 every Sunday morning, completes its Advent / Christmas study this Sunday, January 7. Then the class begins a new study on the Christian journey for six Sunday from January 14 through February 18. In The Christian Life: A Geography of God, noted author and Presbyterian pastor Michael Lindvall describes the life of a Christian as a journey. In this concise volume, Lindvall divides the journey into three parts: "Leaving for Home," "The Way," and "Life on the Road."The first part of the study struggles with the question, "Why go anywhere at all, spiritually speaking?" The second part names the road – the way found in the ancient map of God called the Trinity. The third part describes life on the road as many others have known it, full of mile-markers, road signs, warnings of perilous curves, refreshment for the weary, and notice of lovely things to be seen along the way. This book provides readers with some hints about what they may experience during their individual journeys. Join Chuck Baldwin, who facilitates the Jubilee Class, for a great study this winter. Seekers class begins "Five Wishes" Program The Seekers Class will begin a new study on January 7. "Five Wishes" is the first living will that allows a person to address personal, emotional, and spiritual needs, as well as medical wishes. This document enables people to communicate to family and friends exactly how they wish to be treated if they become seriously ill. Once the form is filled out and properly signed, it is valid under the laws of the state of Georgia. It has been referred to as "the first living will with a heart." Koinonia continues study on Jesus The Koinonia Class continues its popular study on "Saving Jesus." Each session on Sunday mornings includes a 20-minute DVD segment and discussion around that segment. This class looks at progressive Christianity and encourages openness. The study seeks to rescue Jesus from the religious right. Some come on Sundays, others come on Wednesdays, and then others come at various times throughout the week. When many of us were younger, we studied the catechisms of the Presbyterian Church. For our edification, no matter what our age, the Christian Education Ministry shares one question each issue from the catechisms. Question 10. Do you make this confession only as an individual? No. With the apostles, prophets and martyrs, with all those through the ages who have loved the Lord Jesus Christ, and with all who strive to serve him on earth here and now, I confess my faith in the God of loving power and powerful love. v Hebrews 12:1 "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us."v Romans 1:12 "So that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine."Covenant Book Group prepares for new study These are the days for new resolutions. Many people around us are resolving to lose weight, to stay in touch with friends and family more consistently, to spend money more wisely, or to read their Bibles more regularly. If the last resolution was part of your list, or if you find something missing in your life, you are encouraged to join the new study that starts next month. Beginning on February 7, the Covenant Book Group begins a study on a book by Eugene Peterson called A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant Society. Tucked away in the Hebrew Psalter, Eugene Peterson discovers "an old dog-eared songbook" which challenges and encourages modern pilgrims along the journey of life. Psalms 120-134, the Songs of Ascent, were sung by Hebrew pilgrims on their journey to worship in Jerusalem. The author focuses a chapter on each psalm and expounds its theme, including worship, service, joy, work, happiness, humility, community, and blessing. Peterson shares with fellow travelers his warm, mature reflections on these psalms of faith.Join the Covenant Book Group, members and friends of Covenant, as they journey through the Songs of Ascent every first and third Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in the Parlor. You will be glad that you made the journey. Contact Valerie Lyson Humphreys for more information and for a copy of the book.
